I always assumed that items sold by Amazon were immune to zany algorithmic pricing, but this was a bit of a wakeup call. Maybe I shouldn’t subscribe to reasonably priced items on Amazon, since the prices can become not-so-reasonable at the drop of a hat.

I do wonder if price fluctuations like this one are worth it for them in the long run. I cancelled all of my household item subscriptions on Amazon because I realized that the price of paper towels can fluctuate by a factor of 2 over the course of a few weeks. Is that offset by what they gained from people who maintain their subscriptions and automatically reorder items on the higher priced days?
